My mom is staying with us for about a month to escape the cold snowy weather of Northern Japan.
She is very curious and studious in various subjects, so I suggested that she take a look at some picture books in English while she is here. As many of you know, I am trying to spread the idea of learning English through extensive reading. There are books everywhere in our house, so it is not that difficult for her to pick up a book or two in any room she enters.
This morning, she told me that she flipped through this picture book as she was waking up.
She said that it was a bit difficult, but she flipped through the whole book. The pictures in the book helped her to figure out what the story is about.
The book series is called Picture Reader, published by All Aboard Reading.
There are 24 flash cards in the back of each book. There is a picture on one side, and the English word for it on the other side. These cards match pictures that can be found throughout the book.
When I first read the book, it was a little hard to read sentences with words and pictures mixed together. But for beginner readers, it’s kind of fun to be able to read the pictures while reading the sentences with someone who can help.
cards, paper, tape, paint . . .
“I am making cards. I have paper, tape, and paint.”
These flash cards are not only helpful for learning new words, but you can also use them for all kinds of activities and games. What a bonus!
After finishing the whole book, even a simple book like this one, my mom could have a sense of accomplishment. I hope that this feeling makes her want to read more.
Using picture books for learning English is so much fun!
